A Leaper (also known as a Brute or Charger) is a strong, organic infestation that can be encountered on derelicts.

They appear as a red-and-yellow creature with pincers and a spiked back.

Behavior[]

When a door in its room is open, a leaper will slowly wander between the two rooms connected by it, though it often takes them several seconds before they decide to move. When presented with multiple open doors, it will usually pick one and then prefer to only move between the two rooms connected by that door.

When a leaper spots a player's drone, it will attack them by immediately leaping towards them at a very fast speed, dealing 90 HP of damage on contact, after which it will remain stunned for 5 seconds. If there is still a drone in the room after its cooldown ends, it will attack again. Their attacks can cover the distance of a mid-sized room near instantly, giving the player almost no opportunity to avoid it.

If a drone is positioned in a doorway to a leaper's room, it will begin moving towards them slowly until they are close enough to attack.

When presented with multiple drones in the same room, leapers will attack the ones with the lowest numbers first, ignoring higher-numbered drones until the lower ones are moved away or killed.[1]

Sounds[]

Upon attacking something or being hurt, leapers produce a loud roaring noise that can startle even the most experienced players. Otherwise, leapers are completely silent.

Combat[]

Leapers are not affected by radiation.

The leapers' large health pool of 200 HP allows them to survive a detonation from a single mine, thus requiring at least two to kill them. A single trap will still kill them instantly.

It takes 14 bullets to kill a leaper with the Turret upgrade. The leaper will likely still be able to land a hit on the drone while being shot at; it is recommended to use a Shield when attempting to dispatch them this way.

Leapers can be fooled by the Stealth upgrade, however if the drone gets too close to the leaper, they will immediately notice that a hidden drone is in the room, and will move slowly towards the location where they last noticed the drone in an attempt to find it. If it does find the drone, it will attack, and the drone's stealth will be broken. It is possible to use Stealth along with Turret to sneak up behind a Leaper and shoot at it without being attacked.

Leapers are attracted to lures, and will instantly target and attack one in the same room, or an adjacent room, as it. Leapers will prioritize attacking lures over drones, assuming the lure was placed before it began targeting the drone. Placing a lure after a leaper has already targeted a drone will not distract it.

Leapers can be repelled with the Sonic upgrade. Using Sonic in the same room as a leaper will cause it to stop targeting any drones, and it will attempt to escape the room through any available open doors. If it cannot leave the room, it will move around randomly.

Leapers find sharp corners difficult to attack from. Consider positioning your drone perpendicular to a door to kill the leaper as it attempts to turn around to attack. This method combined with a lure is a good way to handle leapers without taking damage using the Turret upgrade, excluding using the health buffer from a Shield.
